Knowledge Quickies! Hips, Knees, Shoulders, Elbows, & Goniometry

Just a few random papers with wee bits of information you might like to know!

1.  IN CATS, total hip replacement improved peak vertical force and vertical impulse as compared to a femoral head and neck ostectomy.  This resulted in improved symmetry and better loading of the corresponding limb.  (Schweng et al, 2024)

2.  A rare complication of fibular nerve injury can occur in dogs following TPLO surgery with a more caudally positioned plate. Fibular nerve injury following TPLO led to atrophy of the cranial tibial muscle, absent hock flexion and a mild lameness. (Anderson et al, 2024)

3.  According to a survey, when it comes to Medial Shoulder Syndrome / Medial Shoulder Instability, boarded veterinary surgeons saw (or found) only 0 – 5 cases a year, as compared to boarded sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarians that saw 11 – 26+ cases annually.  78% of the respondents relied on abduction angle to diagnose.  88% of the sports medicine diplomates relied on diagnostic ultrasound to confirm diagnosis compared to 35% of boarded surgeons.  Preferred treatment was rehabilitation with surgery for unresponsive cases, as reported by 86.9% of all respondents. Preferred surgical treatment was prosthetic ligament reconstruction (62.7%).  (Rocheleau et al, 2024)

4.  In a study looking at prevalence of elbow dysplasia (ED) in 13 dog breeds in France, the research group found that the Dogue de Bordeaux had a prevalence of 32.2%, followed by the Rottweiler (21.3%), Bernese Mountain Dog (19.7%), and Cane Corso (15.7%).  The prevalence of ED was significantly higher in male dogs than in female dogs (17.5% vs 10.5%). (Roels et al, 2024)

5.  Goniometric measurement of stifle angles in control dogs and dogs with cruciate disease yielded excellent intraobserver reliability.  Interobserver reliability was excellent for maximal stifle flexion in both groups (controls and CCL-D) and for maximal stifle extension in CCL-Dogs but only fair for maximal stifle extension in C-Dogs.  the combined average of all maximal stifle extension measurements of all three observers was affected by compliance in both groups. (Volz et al, 2024)
